Review: One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies

I read this book when I was a tween. And I remember loving it. Recently I decided to start buying some of the books that I had loved when I was a tween ( I know I know I am on a book buying ban and I am still honoring it ) and that includes all the books that Soyna Sones wrote. If you are a fan of Ellen Hopkins I think you will love Soyna Sones as well.

I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book is written in verse so it was a quick read. In fact I read in a day. This story follows Ruby after her mother passes as she is sent of to meet her biological father for the first time. Turns out her father is a famous actor. And she hates him.

This book is about family and coming together as one. I love this story. I had actually forgot the ending from when I had read it previously and it came as a shock to me. I kinda predicted the ending but kept thinking that maybe I was wrong and so the ending was a great conclusion to this story. If you are looking for a fast read I highly recommended diving into this book.

Cover Reveal: Volition by Lily Paradis

“I could not put this beautiful and dark tale of Tate McKenna down! Be with her as she discovers the impact that free will, fate and the act of letting go can have on a person!” -Jaclyn (Living in a World of Book Quotes)

“This is a twisted tale… that you can relate to.” – Bryce (Novels to Song)

OMG this cover! I really love this cover. I cannot wait to read this book! This book is already giving me the feels. Like I have this scary feeling that the Young Elites by Marie Lu gave me when you feel for a character but know that every time you scream at them they can’t hear you. I have a feeling that will be me as I read this book.

“I look up into the sky to see all of the drops falling on the ground before they make contact. I realize the drops have more in common with me than I think. We’re all just falling until we’re not falling, and we don’t really have a choice where we land.”

Title: Volition

Author: Lily Paradis

Release Date: February 9th, 2015

Cover by Sarah Hansen of Okay Creations

“A read that will keep you on your toes until the very end. Genius!” – Makayla
(The Book Life)

“You know that feeling in the pit of your stomach that stays with you, then tears you apart slowly at first, and all at once shreds every fiber of your being?

It’s because you’re contradicting the universe.

Everything lines up so perfectly that you couldn’t have imagined it to work out anybetter, but then you have to go and do everything humanly possible to ruin it because you can’t stand to have it go right?

That’s what I did.

I did it because there’s a darkness that surrounds me, and I think I want it there.

My name is Tate McKenna, and my soul is blacker than my heart.”

“The story was lined with black and drowned in glitter… Volition is one of those
books that makes you reflect on life’s past, present, and future.” – Abbey (Books a
la Mode)

volition part 2

“Beautifully twisted…A novel that shocks and surprises, and is not your typical love story. A gripping read filled with complex characters, dark humor and lyrical writing that leaves you wanting more! Paradis produced a story that carried a lot of emotion that dealt with love, relationships, and the darkness that surrounds death and the mark it leaves on those who have escaped it.” -Ashley F. (Falling Down the Book Hole)

Review: Branded

This book has been floating slowly around booktube and I love dystopian so naturally I picked it up. We follow the story of Lexi who is taken to be branded. Each brand is a different sin represents by a tattoo around the persons neck in a certain color. Lexi is accused of the sin lust. Therefore she is branded with a blue band and sent to the Hole, where sinners go after they are branded.

I gave this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars. I had a lot of issues with it but I still really liked the story.

I love this first half of the book. Though there is insta-love which you can tell the authors where trying not to do, the story started off strong. It even made me tear up. But half way threw I got so confused. I feel like the wording and sentences where missing things. It’s hard to explain. It was like saying “I wanted the ice cream,” but it read as “I want cream.” You as a reader had to fill in the holes that where not explained which made it so confusing.

Lexi makes a 360 degree change. I love the Lexi in the beginning of this book. But then she just froze up. She became a different person with a change of the page.

The worst part was the second half’s plot was interesting but I couldn’t believe it with the lack of descriptions. It just didn’t seem realistic. And it was even hard to follow.

It took me a week to get threw the second half of the book where it only took me a day to get half way through.

The good news is the last chapter picked up. Though it was predicable for the ending, it was a good conclusion for this book. And even though I had issues I do plan on reading the next book in this series. In fact I am part of the street team for this series so plan on seeing some updates for that!

If you like dystopian I think you will like this book. Just push through the ending because it is worth the story.

November Wrap Up

This month I finished 6 books. Overall I am really happy with the books I read this month. I read a lot of wonderful books!
First I read Immortal Hearts by Ellen Schreiber. This is the final book in the Vampire Kisses series. I gave this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars. I wasn’t satisfied with the ending of this series. I found in this book and the one before it Raven wasn’t acting her age. She came off as annoying. And I feel like the scene I have been waiting for throughout this series happened really fast. Overall I liked this series but the last two books weren’t my favorite.
Next I finally got to read Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi and I loved it! I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend this book and I think it is one of my favorite books that I have read this year!
Another awesome book that I read this month was Dark Days by Kate Ormand. This is a fast dystopian book that I believe is a stand alone. It was definitely worth the read. I gave this book a 4 out of 5 stars and also have a full review up that you can find here.
Next I read Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi and oh my god guys! This book gave me all the feels! This is the second book in the Shatter Me series and I gave it 5 out of 5 stars.
Next I read The Young Elites by Marie Lu. This is a new series by Marie Lu. It was slow at the start and there is a lot of back story but I absolutely loved this book and can not wait for the next one! I gave this book a 5 out of 5 stars and also have a full review up that you can read here.
Finally I read The Invention of Hugo Cabret. This book is huge but didn’t take long to read. The illustrations are so beautiful and I loved the story which gave me all the feels! I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars and have a full review up here.
